A Powerless Form of Godliness

Paul wrote to Timothy that “in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves [… h]aving a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof; […e]ver learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (2 Tim 3 KJV)

I beat this drum thoroughly and blew this trumpet loudly concerning coronavirus, and I’ll reprise it again:

  • Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. (Psalm 20:7)
  • I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1)
  • God is our refuge and strength, a ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. (Psalm 46:1)
  • The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped. (Psalm 27:8)

Closing churches and throwing on PPE to combat coronavirus is pseudogodliness! Those who love their neighbors will declare spiritual warfare and preach God’s power to the ends of the Earth! As Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules. You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.” (Mark 7:6-8 NIV; Isaiah 29:13)

So, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men; and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil 2:5-11 KJV)
